I've been thinking of printing my book through Lulu. But you recommend Lightning Source. What are the pros and cons of using Lulu?

Pros of Lulu is that it's easy and no setup fees!

Cons include:

* The biggest con is that your unit cost per book is much higher. Lulu prints via Lightning Source, but marks it up (essentially they are a "middleman"). So your cost per book to print is often about double.

* Perception of being published by a subsidy (aka "vanity" press) which has somewhat of a stigma. It doesn't matter, if you are just publishing a book for friends and family, but at a professional level, people in the publishing industry know and care. Bookstores won't touch books from subsidy presses and reviewers scorn them. Again, if you don't care about that, it's no big deal.

* To get your own ISBN, you have to pay Lulu $100. As an established publisher, it's better to have your own block of 10, so you have your own "prefix." (If you get them from Bowker, it's $275 for 10; it's also definitely more cost effective to buy them that way if you plan to produce more than one book.)
