Web Site Reviews

Is Your Web Site Working or is it an Expensive Embarrassment?

As an author, book publisher, or other small business owner, everyone told you that you "needed a Web site." So you found a designer and he cranked out a few a pages and put them online. Now you are wondering why your clients and prospects change the subject when you mention your Web site. You have seen exactly zero response from the site and it annoys you to pay your hosting fee.

If you have discovered that your Web site isn't working, but you don't know why, you need an outside, objective expert opinion.

Although we no longer promote our Web site design services, we still work with a few select clients and of course on our own Web sites (about 25 at last count). Before we got out of the Web design biz, we created a whole lot of Web sites for small businesses. We took that hard-won knowledge and put it into a book called Web Business Success. The bottom line is that over the years, we've seen a lot of good and bad Web sites and "made over" many truly problematic sites ourselves. So we can tell you what's working and what's not on your specific site.

We offer two different types of Web site reviews: a basic Web Site Critique that focuses on the content, and a Web Site SEO Review where we give you a critique, but also dig into the HTML code behind the scenes to look for wasy you you can improve your site's performance in the search engines

Web Site Critique

Our basic Web site critique is a complete content overview to determine what is working (and what's not) with your specific site.

With our Web Site Critique, you'll find out if:

  • Your Web site text is compelling to your visitors. On the Internet there's an old saying that "content is king." What you say can make or break your site.
  • Your color scheme is working for or against your business image. Visitors make emotional snap judgments about your business based on the color, design, and layout of your site.
  • Your Web site navigation is getting visitors where they need to go (and where you want them to go). Confusing navigation can trip up visitors or even slam a (virtual) door in their face.
  • Your contact forms and other programming are working for you or against you. If visitors are leaving your site in frustration, you may never know!
  • Your site is missing critical elements that could be boosting your credibility, inspiring confidence, and adding clarity to the message you are trying to convey.

"You were able to give us an excellent overview of our site and provide us with a clear and concise report on what steps we needed to take to improve our visibility. All at a reasonable price and without delay. We are following your advise and our ranking is improving steadily. Web Site SEO Review

If you have been distressed to discover that you can't find the Web site for your business in Google yourself using any search terms, your site has a big problem. The reality is that these days a lot of people use search engines more than a telephone book. If your Web site isn't "findable," you are losing sales.

If your site is "invisible" online, our Web Site SEO Review is an affordable way to get your site back on track. Unlike our standard Web Site Critique, our SEO Review gets into the nitty gritty guts of your site. We can work directly with you or your Web designer, giving you the benefit of our technical expertise to answer even the most confusing "techie" questions.

Rather than just looking at the surface, we also dig into the code and work with you (or your designer) to make specific recommendations that can save your site from online oblivion.

With the Technical Analysis, you'll find out if:

  • You have included critical HTML tags that help make your site findable in Google or virtually any other search engine. (Hint: Web designers almost always ignore these tags!)
  • Your site is filled with buggy code that doesn't work in all browsers. Using "flashy" elements incorrectly can kill a Web site.
  • Your navigation is as simple and effective as it could be. Confusing navigation is another site killer. Your visitors leave, never to return!
  • Your Web site graphics are optimized for the Internet. (If you've ever wondered why the graphics on everyone else's sites look better than yours, trust us, there are good reasons for it.)
  • The online catalog or content management software you are using is harming or helping your search engine positioning.
  • The HTML code and text in your site is truly optimized for search engines. (Clean, search-engine "friendly" code also is much easier to maintain long term!)
